A copper alloy Roman Bow and Fantail brooch dating from the first or second century. It is 54.8mm long, 22.9mm wide and 17.5mm thick. The brooch has a tubular casing behind the wings to hold the axis bar (which is iron). There is a slot for the hinged pin of which only the very top survives. There is a fixed head loop above of which only the collar survives. It is decorated with a band of rectangular beading. The front of the wings are decorated with a similar but vertical band and the top has a ridge along the edge which runs into the bow. The top half of the bow is only decorated with three transverse incised lines. At the centre is a large circular disc with a double lobed projection at each side. The disc is decorated with a deep circular ring which may have contained enamel. Within this is a circle which is quartered by a cross saltire producing four further possible cells. No enamelling survives. Beneath the disc is a double transverse band of rectangular beading. The fantail of the brooch is triangular and is decorated with four triangular recesses (cells) arranged one point upwards above three, the central one of which is point down. The catchplate survives, but only a small amount of the turnover is complete. The brooch has a beautiful deep brown glossy patina with some areas of orange corrosion. Similar brooches can be seen on page 315 of Hattatt (2000).
