post-medieval silver fragment from a drinking vessel Heavy, cast silver element with central section of a hinge at one end, curved middle section and crude curling scrolls at the other end forming a finial. Probably the central part of the thumbpiece on the lid of a drinking vessel. Similar elements are found on imported pottery drinking vessels, with silver mounts made in London: see for example an unmarked stoneware drinking pot in the V&A, of circa 1550-60, in which the cast thumbpiece is of much finer quality but has scrolls like this fragment, which however end in masks. See Philippa Glanville, Silver in Tudor and Early Stuart England, London 1990, no. 43. Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. Length approx; 2.7 cm. English, 16th Century.
