BUCKLE

Unique ID: LANCUM-4C9117

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Fragment of an ornate, silver-gilt buckle, comprising part of the integral, openwork plate. Surviving dimensions 15x16mm, weight 5.5g. Probably early 16th-century. The object qualifies as Treasure under the definition in the Act .

Prior to discarding, the frame had been broken off at the bar, and the tapering plate (similarly decorated on both faces) appears also to have been lost its inside end. The relief design can be seen as a grotesque mask with a large moustache and saltire lines above (perhaps for a furrowed brow). A corroded copper-alloy rivet between the (?)eyebrows may originally have held a pearl on one or possibly both faces. All this is bounded by a raised, arched linear border (perhaps originally a circle). Part of the textile strap survives inside the sleeve.

This buckle is unusual in being decorated on both faces. The damage may perhaps have occurred in preparing the object for recycling of the precious metal in the melting pot (any gem(s) would have been removed during this process).
