LAMP HANGER

Unique ID: SF6713

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Lamp hanger of unusual form. Largely flat and made of copper alloy, it has a central triangular plate with rounded corners, which has a central circular hole and a similar hole in each corner. The central hole probably, by analogy with other lamp hangers, held a separate stem with a loop at either end. Projecting from the centre of each side of the central triangle is a long flat arm, with each side curving to a point and decorated with short transverse grooves. On the underside of each point is a D-shaped pierced lug, one now worn through. Lamp hangers have hitherto been thought of as relatively standardised items (see Egan 1998 and Rogerson 1987); they date from the medieval period and may have been used in churches or in homes.
