Object type certainty: Certain

Medieval cast lead alloy button. The button has a domed front, a flat back apart from a casting spur and circular depression (casting flaw), and a large attachment loop which is bent back against the button head. The front is decorated with a raised central pimple from which radiate raised curved lines; several of the lines overlap or are joined by four raised cross line. The loop is an arch, 14.9mm long and joined to the button at each end; it is circular is cross section, 4.2mm in diameter. The button has a diameter of 24.5mm, is 6.3mm thick and weighs 27.3 grams. Similar buttons can be seen in “Buttons and Fasteners” by Gordon Bailey (2004) on page 17 and 19. These are dated from 1200 – 1500 and a similar date is suggested for this example. The button has cream patina.
