FINGER RING

Unique ID: PAS-274301

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Incomplete gold ring. The hoop of the ring is circular in section with marginally broader shoulders that taper into the thin band. The ring has an integral bezel that is oval in plan and sub lozenge shape in section, in that it is slightly conical with the underneath being chamfered. To either side of the bezel, where it meets the hoop is a small transverse ridge, almost wedge shaped in appearance. The bezel is empty but would once have held a small uncut (cabochon) stone (such as a sapphire, ruby or garnet). It is slightly misshaped around the internal edges. The hoop is also slightly distorted, but otherwise the ring survives in good condition. The internal diameter of the hoop is 18.96mm. The hoop is 2.02mm wide at the shoulders tapering to 1mm and is 2mm thick reducing to 1mm thick. The bezel is 6.08mm long, 5.94mm wide and 4.52mm high. The ring weighs 1.91g.

An almost exact ring can be seen in the Treasure Annual Report 2003, number 413 from Flintshire, Wales. The ring is typical of the late 12th or 13th century.

Dimensions: Internal diameter: 18.96mm, weight: 1.91g.

Notes:

The object contains a minimum of 10% gold and is over 300 years old. Consequently it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
