BUCKLE

Unique ID: NMS-B8B005

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Incomplete medieval gilded and enamelled copper-alloy Limoges-style rectangular buckle plate, broken across the broad central loop. Frame recesses survive but no pin slot. The backplate is missing. Two copper alloy rivets at attachment edge, both burred over on the reverse to hold a thickness of 2mm. Surviving length 37mm, width 39mm.

The elaborate enamelled decoration comprises a centaur (with the body of a lion rather than a horse) to dexter reguardant with shield (with traces of blue enamel in the centre and white enamel border) in left hand and club in right on a blue field. The head of the centaur is modelled in relief on the gilded head of a separate copper-alloy rivet (flattened on reverse), with traces of engraving delineating the features. The upper part of the centaur is filled with green enamel with bordering yellow enamel. The lion-like lower body has a bifurcated tail, a surviving patch of blue and white enamel on the upper part of the near foreleg and a patch of green and yellow enamel on the upper part of the near rear leg.

Probably manufactured at Limoges; compare Enamels of Limoges 1100-1350 (New York 1996) 287. Late 12th - early 13th century.
