BROOCH

Unique ID: SF6616

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Fragment of head from a small-long brooch, made of thin copper alloy. Part of the headplate survives, with a straight upper edge; all other edges are broken and there is no surviving decoration. Projecting from the upper edge is a large mushroom-shaped flat "knob", 13 mm wide. Two rectangular cut-outs form a narrowed waist, across which is a double groove. The rest of the "knob" is semi-circular, and the curved edge has a border of six to seven worn double-crescent stamps. On the reverse is a pin bar lug blocked with iron corrosion. The break down one side is very fresh; the break down the other, and across the bottom, is a little worn. Apart from the pin bar lug, the maximum thickness of the brooch is 0.8 mm. Early Anglo-Saxon, fifth or sixth century AD.
