COIN WEIGHT

Unique ID: HESH-0B2BD8

Object type certainty: Certain

Copper alloy square shaped coin weight dated to the post medieval period 1564-1604. The coin weight is one of a number known from Antwerp (hence the use of the hand on the reverse). The initials around the hand are indistinct but it is likely to be either Cornelius Janssen (CI) or Cornelius VerPoorte (CVP). In my opinion it is likely to be the former (CI). Both are recorded to the period 1564-1604. (Withers p60). Obverse: Standing female figure (probably a saint or maid) with an orb in left hand and crozier (crook) in left. Figure is enclosed within a circle of pellets. Reverse: Central Hand (of Antwerp) with letters C I or possibly CVP arranged around the lower half of the hand. The weight is heavily worn and corroded and so detail is not especially crisp. Motif is enclosed within a laurel leaf wreath. Dimensions: 14.2 Length. 14 Width, 1.3 Thickness, 1.84g Weight
