MOUNT

Unique ID: GAT-A6CBA0

Object type certainty: Probably
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Solid sub-rectangular mount, truncated at one end, with a denuded semi-circular incised dot pattern. The apparently-complete end is splayed-out and has a longitudinal sub-circular depression, c. 4.2mm in depth, 6.7mm in length and 4.0mm in width. It is unclear how wide the piece would have originally been. The extent to which the semi-circular patterns would have been completed, and the nature of the design is also unknown. It is possible that the current object represents roughly half the width of the original item, and that it would have once been decorated with circular motifs. It is also possible that this is a single component of a larger object or design scheme. The item was cast-in-one, and the join between the two moulds is evident along the straight face opposite the decoration, and also on the apparently-complete terminal, above the longitudinal depression. The decoration appears to have been made by pressing a pointed object into the lead, possibly when it was not fully hardened after casting. The action of decorating the object may have in fact caused it to break: the circular areas appear to have been weakened and cracks are visible in this section.
