UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT

Unique ID: SF6871

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Unidentified object made from copper alloy and lead. Rectangular, flat and thick, it has six faces; two large front and back faces, two sides, and a top and bottom. One of the larger faces, both sides, certainly the top and also perhaps the bottom appear to have been made from a single piece of dark grey cast copper alloy which increases in thickness slightly from one short edge to the other. The other large face is made from a separate sheet of green copper alloy. There is an oval hole in the centre of this showing that the centre of the object is filled with lead. The hole extends down into the lead, almost to the reverse of the large cast copper-alloy face. The bottom had a projection along one edge, which extended out at either end; this is now broken off.

Almost all of the bottom is covered with lead corrosion. Each of the larger faces has a circular hole in each corner; all of the holes are filled with rough green copper-alloy corrosion. The function of this object is unknown; it is possible that it may have been re-used as a foot or as a weight. The cast copper-alloy part measures 28 x 23.5 mm (or 25 mm if including the broken projections) and 10.5 mm thick; with the corrosion and copper-alloy sheet the dimensions increase to 30 x 25 x 12 mm. It weighs 52.78g (1.86 oz).
