CLOTH SEAL

Unique ID: IOW-D342E5

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete cast lead cloth seal of probable eighteenth century date (AD 1700 – AD 1800). Length: 34.8mm; diameter: 27.0mm and 2.6mm thick. Weight: 11.22g. A two disc seal. Side 1 (slightly smaller than side 2): Raised privy mark with initials S C. Side 2: Scratched markings which are difficult to interpret seem to be 12(?0) over horizontal line, possibly 6 or 8 below – presumably consignment numbers, although the 12 could represent the length in yards. No immediate parallels found. The seal has a light grey patina overall.
