Object type certainty: Certain

A copper-alloy brooch of 13th to 15th century date. The frame of the brooch is heart-shaped and has a black-letter inscription extending around the upper face. It has been read (with the help of Malcolm Jones) as ihe[su]s * na / zarenus (Jesus of Nazareth) with a space-filling branch with leaves in the left-hand upper curve of the heart. The pin constriction is located centrally, in the depression between the two curves at the top of the frame. The pin, which is complete, has been looped around this constriction. It is made from a length of copper-alloy wire of D-shaped section and is now corroded. All surfaces of the brooch retain traces of gilding. The object measures 24.4mm long, 21.2mm wide and 4.1mm thick. The weight is 3.66g. The lettering dates the brooch to the late 14th or 15th centuries.
