Roman cast copper alloy trumpet derivative brooch fragment, foot only; 1st-2nd century. The brooch is broken across a circular moulding with central perforation at the junction of the bow (missing) and the the foot. The foot expands to form a triangle and bears curvilinear moulded decoration with a roundel with central pellet in each of the two lower corners. The catchplate extends the length of the reverse of the foot. Length 19.06mm, width across base of foot 18.38mm, thickness including catchplate 9.67mm, thickness not including catchplate but including moulded decoration 4.07mm, weight 4.36g. See Hattatt 2000 ('Visual Catalogue') p330, fig.189 no.1537 for a complete example of a silimar (not identical) brooch, from Wareham, Dorset; and also DENO-047012 (Whitwell, Derbys).
