BUCKLE

Unique ID: HAMP-5ABD64

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast copper-alloy medieval 'locking buckle'. The frame is rectangular in plan with rounded corners. The outer edge is thick (c. 5.8mm), flat and rabbeted (or notched) to accept and secure a U-shaped arm attached to the pin bar: the bar and the arm are both now missing. It also features an incised central logitudinal pin rest. In profile the sides are expanded to receive the off-centred pin bar. The frame has corroded to a red-brown colour with some overlying light green corrosion product. These buckles are well attested in the literature; recent published examples can be found illustrated in Egan 2005 (37-38; refs. 116, 117).
