Early medieval key; cast copper alloy key handle of Scandinavian-influenced design. The design is reminiscent of the Urnes style of Viking art and suggest a date in the late 11th or 12th centuries. The bow of the key handle is a flat plate with openwork decoration and incised lines on the front face forming an abstract design. The back face is undecorated. The shaft of the key handle expands forwards from the bow plate to form a shaft with a roughly circular cross-section. It is broken off before the key bit. Length 45.4mm, width 22.5mm, thickness (shaft) 5.5mm, weight 12.80g Ref: For comparison, see the Early Medieval keys with openwork bows on page 61 of Mills.
