THIMBLE

Unique ID: IOW-F42E91

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A complete and slightly misshapen copper alloy thimble of Medieval or Post-Medieval date (c. AD 1400 – c. AD 1550). Length: 18.0mm; maximum diameter: 21.7mm and about 0.8mm thick. Weight: 5.63g. The thimble is dome-shaped and although misshapen, it can be determined that the sides flared outwards slightly from the crown towards the base. The outer face, including the crown, is spirally indented in a clockwise direction form the base towards the crown. The indentations (or holes) are all circular or sub-circular in plan. There are no ‘nicks’ or other manufacturing marks on the plain rim. The outer face is corroded and has traces of a light to mid-green patina. The inner face is also corroded but has large areas of a shiny dark green patina. Due to the thickness of the walls and the relatively large size of the indentations this thimble was probably for heavy duty use (Holmes 1988, fig. 2, ref. a).
