Copper alloy modern brooch in the shape of a sailing ship made in 1905 to commemorate the death of Nelson. The brooch was made of copper from HMS Victory and given to the British and Foreign Sailors Society by the Lords of the Admiralty. It is 30.4mm long, 24.2mm wide, 2.7mm thick and weighs 6.7 grams. The pin and part of the top and left side of the brooch have broken away due to old breaks; the break is rough and part of the brooch face is curled over backwards. The catch and the hinge for the pin remain - the catch and the spindle of the hinge are made of iron. The ship is represented as a three master with full sails set and three rows of gun ports; presumabley the HMS Victory. On the reverse is inscribed by hand: '[CENTENARY MEMENTO OF THE DEA]TH OF NELS[ON] 1805, OCT 21ST [1905.] CONTAINING COPPER FROM H.M.S. VICTORY THE GIFT OF THE LORDS OF THE ADMIRALTY [TO THE] BRI[TISH] AND FOREIGN [SAILORS S]OCIETY [E.R.VII]' A identical piece in much better condition can be seen in the National Maritime Museum collections and online here: http://www.nmm.ac.uk/collections/explore/object.cfm?ID=JEW0285.
