Report on Three Charles I Coins From Tanworth-in-Arden, Warwickshire, 2006 T357
Three coins of Charles I, two shillings and a halfcrown were discovered in close proximity. The coins have a high silver content which is noticeable in their appearance and type of corrosion product on their surfaces. The shillings are slightly more worn than the halfcrown, but not to the extent of being in circulation for a long time. The halfcrown is less worn, suggesting an even shorter amount of time in circulation. The shillings were issued between 1639 and 1640, whereas the halfcrown was issued between 1645 and 1646. As official English coins, the silver content will be of the sterling standard, 92.5% fine metal.
The coins close proximity when discovered, the similar wear for the shillings and the lesser degree of wear for the halfcrown, indicates they were, in my opinion probably deposited together in the later 1640’s or early 1650’s. As the coins were deposited together, contain more than 10% silver and are more than 300 years old; they fulfil the requirements of the Treasure Act (1996).
