KEY (LOCKING)

Unique ID: SF5737

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Small and simple copper-alloy rotary key. The stem is pierced at the tip, and has a bit in line with the tip with one cleft at the top of the leading edge. The stem is oval in section, and flares from 6 x 4 mm at the tip to 8 x 6 mm maximum. It then flattens to 2.5 mm thick, but continues to flare to 12 mm wide before ending in a point. This flattened area is perforated with a circular hole to form the bow. Total length 47 mm. Although this is an unusual shape for a small key, it is presumably of the same medieval or early post-medieval date as most of these simple casket keys.
