A copper alloy foot from a larger object, probably a box, casket or vessel. The foot is in the form of a paw with four toes. The base of the foot is hollow. The ankle has moulded fur round it and is quite thick, and then the foot finishes with an irregular top on which the box or vessel would have sat. On the top is a tang or pin that points upwards. It is presumed that this was the fixing to the larger object. The tang is sub-square in section. The foot is 30mm long, 22.3mm wide and 20.5mm thick. The foot looks like it may be intended to represent a lion's paw. It is very difficult to date since the decorative motif of a lion has been used from Roman times to the present day. Other similar vessel feet recorded on the database include HAMP-107CF4 and BH-9D4386, which have been attributed to the Roman and Medieval periods. However, it seems most likely that this example is post medieval in date and is similar to SUR-A6F0F5
