Unique ID: DOR-665D58

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Late Saxon cast, copper alloy stirrup terminal. Of zoomorphic design, this terminal would have completely enclosed the diagonal arms at the lower part of a sturrup. It is in the form of a crested animal head which is curled around so that it faces "up the stirrup". There are two small. circular apertures between the underside of the heaed and the body of the terminal. At the top are two raised collars. The crest at the base is decorated with stylised tendrils and lobes. There are two apertures at the side of the terminal where the arm and lower bar of the sturrup would each have emerged. The terminal is filled with corrosion product from the missing iron stirrup. DATE: Second half of the 11th century (1050 - 1100) Dimensions: 43.74 mm x 26.43 mm x 13.35 mm Weight: 32.45 g A similar, more decorative example can be seen in Williams, D, 1997, "Stirrup Terminals", Datasheet 24, Finds Research Group 700 - 1700, p. 2, figure 3.
