A sherd from the base of a relatively thick walled unglazed pottery vessel; not enough survives to indicate the form or overall size, but it is probably from a relatively squat bowl or small container. The sherd dates to the late medieval or post-medieval period (1350 – 1600) and is irregular in plan and sub-rectangular in profile. The fabric is a relatively hard fired earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit, and quartz inclusions. The fabric is also mica rich. The colour of the fabric is a uniform red orange brown colour. Not enough of the vessels survive to suggest the size or form, however the sherd is not particularly plough worn and abraded, suggesting that it has not been in the ploughsoil long. The sherd measures: 68.1mm length, 28.4mm width, is 8.1mm thick (base), 7.7mm thick (side wall), and weighs 39.28 grams. A suggested diameter of the base is 10cm, and the sherd represents 27% of the base. The height or capacity of the vessel cannot be estimated.
