THIMBLE

A cast copper alloy thimble from the post medieval period. It is 20.7mm high and has a diameter of 18.8mm. The walls are 1.6mm thick at the base. The thimble has a domed top and is decorated with very small sub-circular indentations that are probably punched. They are arranged in horizontal lines. There are many areas of surface corrosion, so it is not possible to see if they are in a spiral or whether there is a tonsure. The indentations are unusually small, and suggest that the thimble was used for delicate work (Holmes 1987). The thimble probably dates from the seventeenth or eighteenth century.
