FINGER RING

Unique ID: SF5542

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Unusual 15th/early 16th century signet ring, perhaps from the lower end of the market. The hoop is D-shaped or biconvex, 4 mm wide, and large (c. 25 mm external diameter). The bezel is a raised oval 9 x 10.5 mm and 2.5 mm thick, which is very shallowly engraved with an initial I between two branches. Some lines at the top of the I may have been intended to represent a crown. There is no border. Signet rings with initials of this date usually have a hoop flattened to accommodate a deeply engraved bezel.
