Roman copper alloy disc brooch of wheel type and dating to the late 1st- early 2nd century AD The brooch is near-complete, missing an area of the rim and the pin, and has a weight of 7.7g. The brooch has a hinge mechanism with twin lugs, now badly corroded and a copper alloy axis bar. The circular brooch frame has a diameter of 34.4mm. The rim of the brooch projects above the surface (with a thickness of 2.1mm) and has no peripheral lugs. The outside ring or felloe is comparatively wide at 7.0mm with a faceted internal panel, forming a low central ridge. The inner edge of the felloe also has a raised rim. The brooch has four arms of trapezoidal section and straight parallel sides. The central boss is circular (with a diameter of 7.1mm) and has a waisted side. The top of the boss is also concave and has an integral projecting knop of 2.7mm diameter, giving the brooch a height of 5.9mm (10.7mm overall depth). The brooch has good surface preservation with a pale to mid green patina. File marks from the finishing of the brooch are evident on the reverse. The brooch is similar to Green's (1982) Type 1b, but without ribbing on the arms.

Notes:

This brooch can be closely paralleled with an example found on Margam Beach, Neath Port Talbot and now in NMW collections. The distribution of wheel brooches is concentrated in Gaul and the Rhineland, with a particular density in northern and eastern Gaul (Green, ibid. p168). In Britain the distribution has two main concentrations in south eastern England and to the east of Hadrian's Wall.
