SPINDLE WHORL

Unique ID: DENO-59C686

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Fragment of spindle whorl; broken piece representing about half of a cast lead spindle whorl. The lead is misshapen with an extra, rough bulb on one face. The other face shows the usual circular shape with a small circular hole piercing the whorl around the centre. The lead is covered over all surfaces with a thick, chalky, white patina. Diameter 26.5mm, thickness 6.1mm, weight 10.97g Spindle whorls are very difficult to date as objects of similar design were in use for many centuries. Lead spindle whorls have been dated to all times between the Roman period and the early Post Medieval period.

Notes:

This was found in a field in which eight similar objects were found over a short period of time (see related database records). The collection comprises 4 complete lead spindle whorls, 1 fragment of lead spindle whorl, 2 lead items which could have been used as spindle whorls and 1 small lead weight. The close proximity of these finds suggests that they are associated and may represent part of a hoard, possibly of trading or lead-working artefacts.
