A cast contemporary copy, Limesfalsum, of an as of Otacilia Severa (wife of Philip I, 244-9) with a reverse showing a bust of Nero, possibly cast from a coin of Lugdunum. This is a most peculiar piece and appears to have no parallel.

Notes:

'Limesfalsa' is a name that has been given to light-weight cast base-metal coins, cast in the third century AD. The first examples were found in Pannonia and at Carnuntum (Austria), but such coins have also been found in Britain, notably at Caerleon. The latest cast at Caerleon was of a coin of Gordian III (238-44), which is the latest example from all Britain that Boon recorded in an article in 1965. Furthermore, the latest coin from the large assemblage of cast copies at Carnuntum was also for Gordian III. This makes this particular coin most interesting because Otacilia Severa was the wife of Philip I (244-9). Therefore this coin is an even later example of 'limesfalsa'. Boon suggested that most of the copies were made c. AD 230, to make up for a shortage of small change. He argued that the Gordian III copies were a late, but abortive, attempt to continue the tradition. This piece, however, shows that the practice continued into the second half of the 240s. (See G. C. Boon, 'Light-weights and Limesfalsa', Numismatic Chronicle (6th Series, Vol V) 1965, pp. 161-174)
