A cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount from the 11th century (circa 1000-1100). The mount fits into Williams' Class A, Type 1 classification. The mount has the characteristic pentagonal form, it is 46.7mm long, 33.2mm wide and 2.3mm thick at the centre, narrowing to less than 1 mm at some edges. The main plate of the mount is even apart from the engraved decoration on the surface, this decoration is too worn to be distinguished any details. There are three rivet holes, two at the bottom and one at the apex, all 3.7mm in diameter, but there are no rivets remaining. The bottom is worn and curves inwards slightly. A lobed knops survives on either side of the mount above the bottom rivet holes. A lobed knop also appears on either side of the apex loop, which is rounded, pierced and complete. One of the two lobes which would have sat either side of the mount at the widest point of the plate has broken off. The mount has a short right angled flange at the bottom which appears to be complete. The flange starts 3.7mm in from the sides of the mount and 1.1mm up from the bottom, it is 15.2mm long, 4.4mm wide and 2.1mm thick with worn, angled, sides. The reverse is undecorated. The copper alloy is a mid reddish-brown colour. The mount survives in a very good condition. Similar stirrup-strap mounts can be seen in Williams (1997), p27 -29 (Fig: 19 and 20).
