Object type certainty: Certain

A copper-alloy open-top thimble, or 'sewing ring', of medieval date. It is made from a piece of metal bent into a cylinder with a clear vertical join, one end overlapping the other. At both the top and bottom edges is a pair of horizontal grooves. The rest of the surface is covered with columns of closely-spaced circular indentations. The upper edge is higher on one side than the other. The thimble measures 16.5mm high, 17.5mm in diameter and has sides 1.6mm thick. The weight is 7.82g.

This appears to be the earliest form of thimble found in Britain, and is dated by Read to the early 13th to mid 15th century (2018, 7-10).
