Cast lead weight in the shape of a rectangular bell. It has a small circular hole in the top, presumably for attachment. There is a rectangular hollow in the bottom. One of the curators at National Musuems saw this item and has given the following comments. This is possibly a lead lie, used by sailors. Wax would have been put into the hollow in the base, string tied to the attachment hole and the weight thrown over the side of the ship until it hit the bottom. It would have picked up a bit of the surface of the sea floor (sand/mud/shingle) to give some idea of conditions, or where they were (given a bit of local knowledge of changing seabed conditions).
