A complete cast and possibly lathe-turned copper alloy trade weight issued in the reign of James I or II. The weight is circular in plan and the edge, on the upper surface forms a wide lip. Within the lip there is two concentric low-relief rings. In the field outside the rings and between the lip there are 4 stamped symbols. Firstly the sword of St Paul (representing the City) at 11 o’ clock, the Founder Company’s mark (an ewer) at 6 o’ clock and the royal cipher (a crown above the monarch’s initial: I) at 10 o’ clock and an ‘A’ at 1 o’clock representing the Averdepois weight system. The base of the weight is mainly flat but has a series of concentric rings which may have been produced on a lathe. The weight is in good condition and has a dark-green/grey patina overall. The weight if it was issued under James I dates to 1633-1701 and if it was issued under James II, it dates to 1785 and 1788.
