FINGER RING

Unique ID: BH-48F3A3

Object type certainty: Possibly
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An open-ended gilt copper-alloy ring of possible late Early-medieval date. There is much debate as to the function and date of these artefacts. They are thought by some to be ear-rings; however, the thickness of the terminals would seem to make them unsuitable for this purpose and a more likely explanation is that they are finger-rings. Similar gilt finger-rings have been described as Anglo-Scandinavian, although the recorder knows of no examples from securely dated contexts. The object has been cast in one piece and consists of a squashed (originally) circular hoop. The body is of circular section and tapers to a point at both ends. Most of the remaining gilding is confined to the inner face of the ring. The object measures 25.6mm wide, 25.3mm high, 4.9mm thick, and weighs 4.9g.
