BLADE

Unique ID: SUSS-1E6AC0

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Late Neolithic backed blade, possibly a knife or sickle blade. The blade was made from a tertiary flake, with a flaking angle of 100 degrees and has no remaining cortex. It is 76.9mm long, 27.4mm wide, 14.2mm thick and weighs 28.8 grams. There is some small retouch at the distal end of the ventral face, that on the right hand side is invasive and semi abrupt while that on the left hand side is short and semi abrupt. On the dorsal face their has been extensive retouch to remove material on the right hand side, this has created a blunt, almost flat edge for hafting. The retouch is abrupt and scaled and extends down the entire right side. There is also an area of smaller, abrupt and scaled, retouch on the left hand side, starting 18mm from the proximal end and running for 25.7mmm. The blade was a casual find by a footpath, there was some pottery nearby (not picked up) but no other worked flint. It is a dark grey flint mottled with lighter grey areas, typically of chalk downland flint.
