A sherd from the base of a relatively thick walled unglazed pottery vessel; not enough survives to indicate the form or overall size, but it is probably from a storage jar or similar. The sherd dates to the post-medieval period (1450 – 1650) and is irregular in plan and sub-rectangular in profile. The fabric is a relatively hard fired earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit, and grog (pottery temper) inclusions. The fabric is also mica rich. The colour of the fabric is two-tone in that the centre is a uniform buff orange brown colour, whilst the inner and outer edges a lighter powdery orange colour. There is no evidence of sooting or heating in a fire. Not enough of the vessels survive to suggest the size or form, and the sherd is particularly plough worn and abraded. The sherd measures: 33.1mm length, 24.4mm width, is 9.4mm thick (base), 8mm thick (side wall), and weighs 11.06 grams. A suggested diameter of the base is 18cm, and the sherd represents only 4% of the base. The height or capacity of the vessel cannot be estimated.
