Body sherd of Roman (45-400 AD) Severn Valley Ware Mortaria. The fabric is relatively soft and slightly powdery with a number of angular and sub angular quartz, grit and ironstone inclusions. The fabric also contains considerable inclusions of mica / sand. The fabric colour is a mid buff orange and the outer colour is a lighter mid orange. The inner surface of the sherd has a large number of ironstone and grit inclusions embedded on the surface. This would have provided a grinding medium. There is not enough of the body of the mortaria surviving to give an estimation of the depth or overall form/shape or diameter of the vessel. The sherd measures 34mm length, 39.8mm width, is 5.4mm thick and weighs 10.45 grams.
