Early Roman (40-70AD) Hod Hill brooch. Cast in copper alloy the brooch is incomplete. It has a broken rolled over hinge containing traces of corroded iron. The bow is comprised of mouded decoration which is in the form of two raised horizontal ridges just below the rolled hinge. The bow then expands out into a square with a central raised vertical ridge, and a ridge on each outer edge. The bow has a further two horizontal ridges before tapering towards the foot. There is a worn break at the base of the foot. The remains of the cast catchplate are on the reverse of the foot. The catch now appears sub-rectangular in profile, but would have originally been sub-triangular. There are three evenly spaces holes in the catchplate. The brooch is dull red-brown in colour with some patches of green copper corrosion. The brooch is 48.28mm long, 13.53mm wide at the head, 11.27mm wide at the centre of the bow and 3.01mm wide at the foot. The brooch is 3.46mm thick, increasing to 6.61mm to incorporate the catch plate. It weighs 4.6 grams.
