A cast late Medieval to Post Medieval lead alloy biface token. Obverse has a six petalled flower (Powell type 1) with a central raised pellet, and further single pellets between each petal. The reverse is difficult to fully interpret with a clear letter S followed by what could be a lower case T (powell type 2) or a cross pommee (powell type 14). Between the two there is a vertical line leading from the edge which could represent a contraction mark. The exact function of such tokens is uncertain with theories that range from small change, checks and tallies in lieu of money, such as hop picking tokens; to gaming counters and many more. There are provincially struck examples but since lead alloy is so simple to fabricate there are also many roughly produced by local artisans, and they lack any simplistic dating typology. A date range of circa 1450-1750 is suggested for this example.
