Postmedieval foreign coin. A silver soldino minted in Venice between the years 1501- 1521 AD. The soldino depicts the doge Leonardo Loredan (1501-1521). Soldini were minted in Venice, and known as galyhalpens (galley-halfpence) because they were often brought into Britian by Venetian trading fleets. Soldini were used as illegal alternatives to official issue halfpennies and farthings. Obverse: Leonardo Loredan holding banner and kneeling left before St Mark, standing right; .S.MV. LEO LAV [exergue illegibile] Reverse: Standing forward facing figure of haloed Christ holding cross; LAVS TIBI SOLI
