TREASURE CASE : 2007 T21

Roman silver finger ring.

Description of find

The ring hoop is oval, and has a smoothly swelling profile which expands from the base to sharply carinated shoulders which support an ovate box setting. The ring has a number of decorative mouldings. One is on the underside, which shadows the shape of the hoop, and the others are unusual concave triangular mouldings on either side of the bezel. The stone which originally sat within the oval box setting is missing; only traces of the solder or adhesive fixing remain.

Discussion

The ring is very small, so was probably worn on the upper part of the finger, rather than below the knuckle. It probably belonged to a young woman or child. The ring has been chemically cleaned.
