TREASURE CASE : 2004 T483

Post-medieval silver-gilt dress pin of trefoil form applied with three hemispherical bosses. The bosses are decorated with filigree decoration and knops. Hole at centre of trefoil-shaped backplate indicates that there was originally a separate flower-head element on the front, attached to the backplate with a butterfly clip, as seen in Dora Thornton and David Mitchell, "Three silver Tudor dress-hooks", The Antiquaries Journal 83 2003, p. 490 for similar hook with maker's mark from Petersfield, Hampshire. Front is gilded. Original hook and bar plate now missing. Approximately 1.2 cm along each side. 16th Century. The precious metal content of the dress hook fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10%. See Treasure Annual Report 2002 no.133 for similar fragment from the Isle of Wight, and ibid. no. 138 for trefoil shaped hook with three plain gilded bosses.
