SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: WILT-359CB6

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Possibly incomplete Medieval copper alloy seal matrix with a shortened hexagonal handle. The matrix itself is 16.8mm in diameter and the handle appears to have been broken in antiquity and smoothed over, so it is very short but just holdable. The seal matrix stands 9.6mm in height and weighs 5.57g. The matrix depicts a central heart within two arms, around which the legend reads *CREDEMICHI for crede mihi - 'believe' or 'trust' me. A pointed oval seal matrix in the Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum collection depicts a bird with a spray inside the same inscription (Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum Medieval Catalogue Part 1, pp.33 & 37 no.22). On the outside edge is a probable dot to indicate where the top of the matrix was. 14th century.

Inscription: *CREDEMICHI
