A copper-alloy rather small example of a Hattatt Maxey type bow and fantail Roman bow brooch (Hattatt, 1989, 314, no 879). Complete apart from pin and part of spring. 27.48mm in length and 15.18mm in width. The wings are semi-cylindrical and undecorated and a double pierced lug holds the axis bar and spring cord. Three coils of the copper-alloy spring survive only. The bow has three deep longitudinal grooves running down it and flares at the base of these grooves into the fantail, this is a flaring triangular shape with a straight teriminal edge, it is flat and is decorated with a border grooves with another inner border of tiny circular indentations within these. The front face also has traces of a white metal coating. The catchplate has a pronounced pin groove on the inside.
