Roman copper alloy trumpet derivitive, Alcester type, brooch, 32mm long, 9mm wide and 15mm deep. The brooch is in a fair condition with a green patina and weighs 5.48grams. The brooch consists of a triangular shaped back plate from which the bow emerges. Its reverse contains a vertical ridge above the spring which has 4 coils present. The bow is unusual as it has two parts, the upper part curves and tapers as a normal bow when viewed from the front, but also has a seperate lower section which joins the bottom of the back plate and the shoulder. When viewed from the side the gap between these two parts forms a perfect circular void. This sits on a solid semi-spherical protruding shoulder. The lower part of the brooch consists of a rectangular plate which sits near the back of the underside of the shoulder. It appears to be decorated with an incised border and possibly incised dot and rings. It has the remains of a protrusion on its lower edge which presumbably formed a loop. The catchplate runs the length of this section and has worn to a shallow arc. The brooch is very similar to eg. 1539 and 979 in Fig 190 of Hattatt's ancient brooches.
