BROOCH

Unique ID: SF4785

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Copper alloy penannular brooch fragment. Half of the ring, missing pin, fairly corroded. Circular section ring, diam. 3 mm, with closely set transverse grooves on the outer face, undecorated (grooves worn away?) at the back. The terminal is slightly expanded, flattened and almost rectangular with a lozengiform moulding on the outer face and another V-shaped moulding joining the terminal to the rest of the frame. This is a highly devolved zoomorphic form, as Fowler type E and Hattatt no 656. Current (limited) chronological data suggests this type was a late Roman contemporary of the crossbow brooch with smaller numbers continuing to be used into the sub-Roman period. Original diameter about 40 mm.
