Rim sherd of an unglazed earthenware pottery vessel dating from the medieval period (1050 – 1350). The sherd is most likely to be from a cooking pot. The fabric of the sherd is a relatively hard earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit and quartz inclusions. There is also a large amount of mica in the fabric. The fabric colour of the sherd is two tone, the centre is a reduced dark grey black colour, whilst the inner and outer surfaces are a reduced mid grey colour. The rim is everted with an inturned lip. The outer surface is sooted; the inner has a light white grey surface – presumably lime scale from boiled water. A suggested diameter of the rim is 25cm, and the sherd represents only 8% of the rim. The height or capacity of the vessel cannot be estimated. The sherd measures 61.4mm length, 26.6mm width, is 14.6mm thick (rim), 3.4mm thick (body) and weighs 19.68 grams.
