Object type certainty: Certain

Early Medieval copper alloy cruciform brooch fragment, 50mm long, 44mm wide and 10mm thick. The brooch is in fair condition with a brownish patina and weighs 19.54g. The object has been well made but is suffering from various forms of corrosion.

It consists of a central headplate which has a large central panel, with a thin recessed panel at each side. Attached to this are three integrally cast half-round knobs; each is identical, with a base and waist below the hemispherical dome. They are distinctly rounded, not elongated as many knobs are.

A short stub of the bow is present, which has snapped off at a diagonal break; above the break is a hint of a rectangular-section area above a faceted centre. There is no decoration present on the brooch apart from this decorative step at the start of the bow. The reverse contains two semi-circular lugs, 8mm high, which contain an iron pin which is heavily corroded. A close inspection of this corrosion failed to identify any fabric impressions.

Class: cruciform
