MOUNT

Unique ID: CAM-055A22

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A copper alloy mount possibly from a shield, casket or scabbard dating to the Middle or Late Iron Age. The stud is circular in shape and hemispherical in section. The upper surface of the stud possesses a central circular depression. The depression is decorated with a knurled ring of a white substance, which has tentatively been identified as coral. The ring encircles a small, rounded, circular knop. The underside of the mount is flat with uneven iron corrosion adhering to it. There is a central, circular perforation. The mount has a diameter of 16mm and a thickness of 5mm. A similar stud with an inlay of red coral from the Mediterranean was found with a sword in Grimthorpe (Stead, 19??, 61). This stud was interpreted as decoration from the scabbard or hilt.
