Probably Roman (possibly post medieval) iron hob nail, with a hemi-sperical head 9.9mm in diameter and 4.6mm thick and a bent shank. It weighs 1.72g. The shank is square in section below the head (5x5mm) which tapers in thickness over a (bent) 9.2mm to 4.7x2.3mm. The unbent length would have been c.15mm. The condition of the iron may suggest a post medieval date as it is rather good for Romano British. The hobnail is 13.8mm in complete length. Hobnails were used in Roman military footwear, boots were made from three main pieces of leather, the upper sole and the insole, all three layers were clenched together with hobnails, frequently arranged in patterns, some of which were created to facilitate comfortable walking (Bishop and Coulston 1993, 100, fig.61).
