Medieval copper alloy sheet sexfoil mount. The mount has a high domed centre with a circular hole through it, slightly off centre, for the seperate rivet. The six lobed petals are raised with indents between and the edge is shaped to the curved outer edges of the petals. The tip of one petal is lost to an old break or original mistake with manufacture. The rivet is formed of a short lengh of copper alloy circular sectioned wire with the top flattened flush with the front of the mount.
Egan and Pritchard (1993) illustrate a range of flower mounts made of copper alloy sheet, p.186-194. They are highly variable with 5 to 13 petals; no.1016 on p.191 is most similar to this example. These mounts were in common use by the middle of the 14th century and continued to be popular until the late 15th century (ibid p.186).
